Infertility at 30?

It seems more and more these days studies on women’s health aren’t revealing anything in the way of good news. Women lose iron, bone density, B12, their hair, and now they are losing their eggs much faster than anybody ever thought possible. And it looks like you can wait to get your first breast exam much longer than before, at least that’s what they say. But on a positive note Omega 3’s may be much better then initially thought.

 

With dual income households and women wanting to wait until just the right time to have children, it seems the average age of motherhood is steadily increasing for the women of today, but recent studies suggest that may not be the best idea for success in having a healthy baby. A new study from the University of St. Andrews and Edinburgh University in Great Britain have come out with a wake up call to all women on the fence about when is the right time to have a child. 

 

It’s commonly known that women are born with all the eggs they need for the rest of their lives. But the problem is how long are these legs going to last, and what are the quality of those eggs? On average, women are born with 300,000 eggs but that number too has been questioned. It seems some women are born with as few as 35,000 eggs and others have as many as 2 million. 

 

These new studies show that by the age of 30 most women only have about 12% of their original egg reserve left, and the body doesn’t save the best for last either. In fact the best eggs are dropped first so by the time you get to that final few there is a higher chance of the eggs not developing properly or the child being born with an abnormality. And by the age of 40 as little as 3% of the egg reserve can be left. 

 

The study claims that this is the case for 95% of women. Some doctors are suggesting that women get screened for fertility as often as they do for cervical cancer. 

 

Mammograms at 40 or 50? The controversy rages on….

Now on to another item that has changed the game in women’s health, and that’s the recent release from the Government Advisory Panel of new recommendations for mammogram frequency, and the age at which women should get screenings. After conducting a study of over 300,000 women the conclusion was that unless you have a family history of cancer, mammograms are not necessary until a woman is 50, and even then only once every 2 years.  

 

But cancer is sneaky, and most women believe 2 years is long enough for a fast-spreading cancer to go from treatable to deadly! The study reports that screenings before 50 only detect and save 1 out of every 1900 women screened, but what if you’re that one, would that matter to you?

 

Live Forever with Omega 3’s in Fish Oil

Now on to some good news for a change. We all know we need to keep our bodies full of what it needs to stay healthy- food, water, air, and of course, plenty of vitamins. Still, it seems that some are even better for you than first thought, and those would be Omega 3’s,  better known as Fish Oil. A paper published in the Jan 20th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association  claims that Omega 3’s have been proven to help slow cell aging by increasing the length of telomeres in DNA. 

 

I’m sure you’re asking “What’s a telomere?” Well a telomere is at the end of your DNA strand and basically helps keep it together. Every time our cells divide they get a little shorter and a little shorter until they are no longer able to duplicate and they die. Well Omega 3’s have been shown to increase the length of our telomeres and lengthen the life of our cells, in essence giving us a younger biological age. 

 

Omega 3’s also help in the fight against cancer. As we get older, some cells stop duplicating due to the deterioration of the telomeres, but when they somehow find a way, this often leads to cancer. These cells are called “immortal cells”. What an ironic name for a cell that could kill you! If you’re interested in learning  more about these cells, do a search for “HeLa Cells”. Today, the population that will receive the most benefit from Omega 3’s are people that suffer from coronary artery disease, but this however doesn’t change the fact that everybody can benefit from them.
