"102" What Do We Do?

"102 Dalmatians" was released on Thanksgiving Day. I feel we have an obligation to at least attempt to deter the public from running out to buy those cute Dalmatian puppies only to turn them in to shelters months later when they have lost their charm. The following is a reprint from Animal Sheltering: "During the year following Disney's 1997 release of 101 Dalmatians, some shelters saw their Dalmatian relinquishment numbers QUADRUPLE."

The special needs and traits of the Dalmatian are often unknown by those flocking to get the latest fad, or to please their children. If "102" has the same effect as "101", soon these precious, abandoned and unwanted animals will fill shelters. Please enjoy Disney's new release of "102 Dalmatians", but realize these are a special breed dog with traits that many people find too time consuming and cumbersome to deal with.

According to the Dalmatian Club of America, Dalmatians are loved by owners who like active, challenging dogs. Dalmatians are not liked by owners who want quiet, settled dogs.

If you are thinking of bringing a Dalmatian into your household, inform yourself about what to expect by contacting The Dalmatian Club of America at or the national rescue coordinator at 410-356-7252 / Issue 12 - September 2018
