men of a certain ageMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE Returns June 1st at 10/9c on TNT

Middle age has long been a staple of sitcoms, but most of the time the jokes center on the fairer sex’s experiences. TNT broke the mold with this latest offering from Ray Romano, who dared to explore manhood at 50 and beyond. Raising children, dating younger women, competing with younger men, and the personal struggles of midlife are all given a frank, honest treatment. While that may sound like the pitch for a Flomax commercial, Romano and co-stars Andre Braugher and Scott Bakula deliver strong performances and genuine laughs.

white collarWHITE COLLAR June 7 at 9PM ET on USA

White Collar’s ongoing success is really not surprising. At a time when corruption and greed cost thousands of people  their jobs, a show about a cop and con team who take down white collar criminals becomes a delicious revenge fantasy. With handsome Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) and Peter Burke (Tim Dekay) returning for Season 3, this next season promises to delve deeper into characters’ back stories, with joy of joys, flashbacks!

covert affairsCOVERT AFFAIRS June 7 at 10PM ET on USA

There are plenty of spy shows on TV, and plenty of beautiful blondes as well. But only USA had the temerity to combine these two staples into a single show. The mix definitely works. Piper Perabo is back as leggy and septilingual super-spy, Annie Walker, for another ten episode season. Her season finale adventure with rogue CIA agent Ben Mercer in Sri Lanka sets up this explosive sophomore season. Agent Walker must once again balance her life as an elite CIA spy with the personal life she struggles to maintain.

memphis beatMEMPHIS BEAT Returns June 14th at 9/8c on TNT

Jason Lee is back as wise-cracking Memphis cop Dwight Hendricks. It may seem risky to shoehorn yet another police drama into an already procedural-packed primetime, but TNT’s blues-soaked take on the genre deserved a second season. With the by-the-book, no-nonsense boss, jaded veteran “Whitehead” (Sam Hennings) as a partner, and hapless officer Daley Sutton (a bug-eyed DJ Qualls) rounding out the cast, viewers tired of the same old procedural crime show should catch this Memphis-flavored barbecue of a cop show. Plus, he sings the blues. Can Ice-T do that?

hawthorneHAWTHORNE Returns June 14th at 10/9c on TNT

The doors of Richmond Trinity have closed--permanently. That is where we find Chief Nursing Officer, Christina Hawthorne (Jada Pinkett Smith), as Season Two of TNT’s powerful medical drama HawthoRNe begins. She and several nurses and doctors have been transferred to the run-down hospital James River, where they will not only battle budget cuts and issues of patient care, but also inspectors who are trying to shut them down. Christina must also deal with Gail Strummers, the ER’s head nurse at James River, who is stuck in her ways, while also navigating a growing romance with Dr. Tom Wakefield (Michael Vartan), the Chief of Surgery. The epic, dramatic, soap opera-esque twist? She’s pregnant with his baby. If you want drama, you’re surely to find it in the second season of HawthoRNe.

burn noticeBURN NOTICE June 23 at 9PM ET on USA

Five seasons is practically forever in the world of scripted shows on basic cable, but Burn Notice will beat the odds this summer when it hits the half-decade mark. Jeffrey Donovan is back as decommissioned spy Michael Westen. While he still hasn’t found out who “burned” him, he’s doing quite well putting his cloak and dagger skills to work for those willing to pay. In a rare move, USA actually committed to a sixth season as well, so fans can enjoy explosions, gunfights, and Donovan’s trademark narrative musings for two more seasons, at least.

true bloodTRUE BLOOD June 26 at 9pm et/pt on HBO

Everyone’s favorite bloodsuckers are back! With Season Four of the popular vampire series pulling elements from the fourth book expect the show’s supernatural menagerie to expand even more, adding witches to the vampires, werewolves, werepanthers, fairies, shifters, and maenads already cavorting across the screen. Are the witches behind vampire Eric Northman’s (still played by hunky Swede Alexander Skarsgard) memory loss? Find out when True Blood’s trademark mix of sex, gore, and fantasy returns to the screen.

royal painsROYAL PAINS June 29 at 9PM ET on USA

Season Two of USA’s Royal Pains went out with a bang. The “concierge doctor,” Hank, and Eddie, his brother and business partner, find out that their father is a convicted criminal who became an informant against the shady HankMed angel investor, Boris. Divya finally kissed Adam after a long bout of flirting. This left everyone wondering if it was a momentary lapse of judgement or is Divya rebelling against her arranged marriage to Raj. The jam packed season finale ended with Eddie having a heart attack. Chances are though, he’ll live, considering he just officially moved in with “New Parts” Newberg who has yet to hear about his SEC fraud.

torchwoodTORCHWOOD Returns July 8 on Starz

Fun Fact: rearrange the name of the sci-fi British import Torchwood and you get the title of another sci-fi British import, Doctor Who. This isn’t a coincidence, as the alien-hunting Torchwood Institute originally appeared in the 2005 season of the venerable British  series. Season Three was only five episodes long, leaving fans many  cliffhangers to pinder. Expect Season four, Torchwood: Miracle Day, to take a darker turn as the show’s cast investigates a so-called “miracle” - death is no longer an issue for the people of earth.

curb your enthusiasmCURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM July 10 at 10pm et/pt on HBO

Larry David’s critically-acclaimed and beloved comedy is returning after a nearly two-year hiatus. As you probably recall, the Seventh Season ended with the epic Seinfeld reunion show, and leaving questions as to whether or not he was actually getting back together with his on-air wife, Cheryl (Cheryl Hines). “After much soul searching – and by the way, it was nowhere to be found – I have decided to do another season of Curb,” says Larry David. “I look forward to the end of shooting, when I can once again resume the hunt for my elusive soul. I know itʼs here somewhere or perhaps in the rugged mountainous regions of Pakistan.” Expect Season Eight of the semi-autobiographical series to continue the series’ trademark irreverent humor and ever-growing list of guest stars. Season Eight will feature Ricky Gervais, Wanda Sykes, Cheyenne Jackson, and Michael J. Fox.

the closerTHE CLOSER Returns July 11th at 9/8c on TNT

As the Seventh Season begins, the squad is moving into their new office and dealing with the change. Simultaneously, there is a hunt for a new police chief, which leaves Brenda (Kyra Sedgwick) and several other members of the force jockeying for promotions. Inner office politics doesn’t mean crime halts, however. A sniper takes aim at a posh neighborhood, a possible serial rapist uses a stun gun on victims, and a drug-related custody battle ends in the death of two people. Captain Raydor (Mary McConnell), who bumped heads with Brenda in the past, returns to the show, which could have major implications in Brenda’s future with the department.

rizzoli and islesRIZZOLI & ISLES Returns July 11th at 10/9c on TNT

Best friends Jane Rizzoli (Angie Harmon) and Maura Isles (Sasha Alexander) return to fight crime and put some of Boston’s most notorious criminals behind bars. Rizzoli, a detective in BPD’s homicide unit, and Isles, a medical examiner, are exact opposites. Rizzoli is blue collar and empassioned; Isles is white collar and icy. Yet, they team up to figure out the “who did it” and “how did it” of the most complex crimes in the city. Rizzoli & Isles also stars Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos) as Angela, Jane’s demanding and intrusive mother & Lee Thompson Young (FlashForward) as Det. Barry Frost, Jane’s somewhat green partner.

entourageENTOURAGE Returns July 24 at 10:30PM ET on HBO

Entourage’s Eighth Season is slated for a summer debut. The eight episode arc brings back Marky Mark’s bro squad and plenty of guest appearances by big name stars. Like Curb Your Enthusiasm, the show is a satire send-up of Wahlberg’s real life showbiz experiences. If you haven’t caught this dramedy (drama-comedy) yet, don’t wait, as season eight will be the show’s last. A film is also under way.

leverageLEVERAGE Returns July 26th at 9/8c on TNT

After breaking out of prison, bringing down a powerful financier, and dealing with drama in his personal life, Nate Ford (Timothy Hutton) and his team of of highly skilled thieves and masterminds return to bring justice to those who use their power and wealth to victimize others. Though it is not clear how Season Four will unfold, it can be guaranteed that there will be plenty of plotting, hacking, thieving and muscle involved. As well as some much-required-for-full-entertainment romantic tension between the team.

weedsWEEDS Returns August 16 at 10PM ET on Showtime

America’s favorite drug dealing mom is back this summer with Season Seven of Showtime’s hit Weeds. The season finale had Nancy Botwin, played by Mary-Louis Parker, and her family desperately trying to leave the country to escape her politician/druglord husband Esteban. After some clever, albeit racial, profiling, Andy, Silas and Shane manage to make it past the airport checkpoint and head for Europe. Meanwhile Nancy was forced to stay in the States and give herself up to the FBI for fear of being killed by Esteban and his men / Issue 123 - September 2018
