In a summer suffering from sequel-itis, J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 stands out for being a bold stab at originality – it also stands out for its unusual cast of young and relatively unknown stars.

Joel Courtney   Joel Courtney, 15, plays Super 8’s Joe Lamb. The Seattle area native got his first audition for the film while visiting his actor brother in LA. His character does the make up for the kids’ zombie film. Although he is not the leader of the group of kids, much of the movie centers on him, his troubled relationship with his Deputy Sheriff Dad, and his coming of age girl problems.

Ryan Lee, 14, plays pyromaniac Cary. Cut-up Cary is an individualist in charge of the kids’ zombie special effects. Even though he’s a trouble maker, he’s always good for a laugh. Lee says he and the other kids all watched producer Steven Spielberg’s classics like E.T., The Goonies, and Stand by Me. Ryan Lee Super 8

Riley Griffiths Super 8 movie  Riley Griffiths, 14, is Charles, the leader of the group and director of the zombie film. He and Courtney’s characters are best friends despite his bossy tendencies. Like his character, Griffiths actually made amateur movies as a kid.

Gabriel Bosso (17) admits his character Martin is a bit “slow.” He is still well-liked by his group of friends. You can also catch him on Showtime as Adam, the son of Laura Linney’s character on The Big C.  Gabriel Basso Super 8 movie

Zach Mills Super 8 movie  Super 8’s Preston is given life by Zach Mills (16). This “smart kid” enjoys giving out facts to his friends, even if they aren’t always useful. Mills is no stranger to the camera, and he starred opposite Natalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman in 2006’s Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium..

13-year-old Elle Fanning plays the only girl in the group. Her character Alice Dainard also has tension with her dad. Although she’s just one of the guys, the role is underscored by loneliness. Fanning (little sis of Dakota Fanning) is full-steam ahead on her own acting career, starring in the Francis Coppola thriller Twixt Now and Sunrise and Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo alongside Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson.  Elle Fanning Super 8 movie
