Should old acquaintance be forgot? Sure, the new year is always a time to look to the future, to make resolutions, to steady sights on the “next big thing,” but it’s also a time when many take a look at the past and take stock of what a long, strange trip it’s been. In honor of the newly-minted 2012, we take a look back at the past 12 years of covers, totalling a staggering 130 issues, to bring you  five of our most successful and five of our least popular covers, and their accompanying stories.

For our best, we picked covers for their artistic merits, or just their cultural significance, or both. Our cover image of John and Yoko – an exclusive shot taken by our editor Raeanne Rubenstein – is the perfect example of an image both culturally relevant and aesthetically superior. Others made our favorite list for breaking the mold of the all-too-typical “smiling face” cover image.

SEX & THE CITY May 2008

LOVE, LOSS & YOKO Nov 2010

THE WALKING DEAD Oct 2010

SEMPER FI: RUDY REYES July 2008

THE HANGOVER June 2009

The real fun, of course, was selecting our worst covers. After years of publishing Dish, it was far too easy to pick on the dated covers featuring long-forgotten stars, so we collected five of our more embarrassing editions for your collective joy. Some, like our cover featuring Holly Hunter as tennis legend Billie Jean King made the list for their crimes against fashion, while others earned their ignominy with bland designs or by outlasting the short-lived shows they featured.

WHEN BILLIE BEAT BOBBY March 2001

HOLLYWOOD GOES NASHVILLE September 2007

MY GENERATION September 2010

J.K. ROWLING-HARRY POTTER December 2001

VANISHED- GALE HOWARD August 2006

Dish is now entering its 13th year of publishing, no small feat for an online magazine, and we aren’t sitting still. We’ve got big plans for the coming year, including a complete redesign of the website plus new sections, stories, and features for our Kindle readers.

Here’s to 2012. Long May The Covers Shine!  And A Very Happy New Year From All Of Us To All Of You!.
