Fall is fashion’s favorite season, when designers get the chance to really go all out with statement making, over-the-top shapes, colors and fabrics. You, on the other hand, don’t need to go to fashion-extremist Lady Gaga lengths to get your point across. As the saying goes, and as is the case with the following fashion accessories, a little goes a long way. By incorporating small doses of leather, leopard, red, sequins and houndstooth into your closet, you can easily update your cool weather wardrobe.

Halloween is over! To avoid being mistaken for wearing a Catwoman costume out and about, pick leather for the top or bottom, not both! Keep it sweet in a pleated pleather skirt like the one from Forever 21 ($22.80, Forever21.com), paired with a lacy top and cute booties like Guess Parsha Booties ($129, Guess.com). Or, toughen up your look with rock star-approved leggings like G-Star’s Modernist Radar Leather Skinny Pants ($220, Revolveclothing.com) or Rag & Bone Metallic Charcoal Leather Leggings ($990, Ssense.com); wear these with a silky blouse and durable jewelry like Tory Burch Square Logo-Studded  Wrap Bracelet ($95, Neiman Marcus) for added attitude.

HoundstoothHaute Houndstooth
This duo-tone, broken check pattern can instantly make your fall basics more interesting. Originating in the Scottish lowlands, the pattern is now a favorite of the all-around awesome rocker/fashion designer/philanthropist Gwen Stefani. Get the look with her L.A.M.B. Women’s Oneida Wedge Pump ($395, Amazon.com) or head to Bebe for the less pricey Lexington Studded Houndstooth Boot ($145, Bebe.com). For a wear-to-work option, try Wolford Dandy tights ($58, Wolford.com). And don’t forget about your tech accessories! Snag the iPhone Full Body Vinyl Protection Decal Skin in White Houndstooth for a bargain ($4.95, Amazon.com).

Leopard Leopard Love
Release your inner feline with a wild print that’s just as fierce as you are. Stay on the casual side with Gap Leopard calf hair ballet flats, ($49.95, Gap.com), Zara Leopard and Stud Belt ($39.90, Zara.com and the Juicy Couture Two-Toned Cropped Fedora ($68, Zappos.com). Or go for glam with the Colin Stuart Platform Pump ($128, Victoriassecret.com), Forever 21 Round Ombré Leopard Print Sunglasses ($5.80, Forever21.com) and the splurge-worthy Michael Kors Large Tonne Calf-Hair Foldover Clutch ($995, MichaelKors.com).

RedRa-Ra-Red
Just a pop of this bold hue is all you need to get noticed in a good way. Stand out in a crowd of dark autumn shades by mixing in accessories in bright cherry like the Kate Spade New York Red Stainless Metro Watch ($150, Bloomingdale’s) and Kate Spade New York Crossbody Fliker Tenley ($178, Bloomingdale’s), DKNY sunglasses ($67.99, Zappos.com) or the Jessica Simpson Flower Cloche ($54, Zappos.com).  Or, if you’d rather start out small, go with the Topshop Stone Claw Ring ($12, Topshop.com) to add a little fire to your fall ensemble.

SequinsSocial Sequins
The quickest way to turn any outfit from ordinary to holiday party-appropriate is by adding some sparkle. Your fabulous feet will be the talk of the town in Rachel Roy’s Gardner High Heel ($225, Bloomingdale’s), and you can fit all of your necessities for a night out in the Kenneth Cole Color Mix Cross-Body Bag ($198, Kennethcole.com). Sequins are also great for dressing up cold weather wear, as with the San Diego Sequin Beanie ($31, Zappos.com), Guess Sequined Infinity Wrap Scarf ($48, Guess.com) and the UGG Sparkle Camo Earmuffs ($85, UGG.com).
