         Summer Makeup Fun

               by Solana Hawkenson

When it comes to your make-up routine, you may occasionally find yourself stuck in a rut. So what’s a girl to do?

Kick beauty boredom to the curb with three of summer’s hottest, brightest makeup trends! This season’s most sought after products pack a powerful punch of color, and are not intended for the faint of heart. Lashes, lids, lips - whatever your favorite feature is, accentuate it in an adventurous way. Be bold! Be daring! This summer, it’s all about having fun with your makeup.

High Impact! Mascara Blast
You’ve tried bright colors on your eyelids and lips in the past, so why not on your lashes? Many of the top beauty brands have released mascaras in non-traditional colors this summer. I think these bright hues will be especially fun poolside or at the beach, but don’t be afraid to take them out, any time! Makeup artist Peter Phillips for Chanel created three electric hues, a bright yellow, a lime, and an aqua blue, for a butterfly inspired summer collection. According to Yves Saint Laurent, purple mascara is one of their best-selling colors, and happens to look great with green eyes. If you have hazel or brown eyes, a green mascara will intensify the color. Tip: avoid matching your mascara color to your eyeshadow; instead, choose a complementary color in a light shade.Chanel MascaraHere’s one more cool tip from makeup artist Gucci Westman, who suggests that to keep mascara looking chic and not cheap, apply your usual black mascara first; then, just hit the tips of your lashes with the bright mascara so it really pops. You could also try just using the brighter shade on your bottom lashes.Mascara

Try: YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof in “Signature Violet” and “Majorelle Blue”, $30, Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in “Zest”, “Lime Light”, “Aqua Blue” and “Blue Note”, $30, Make Up For Ever Smokey Lash Mascara in “Green”, “Blue” and “Plum”, $23, Dior’s Diorshow Mascara in “Catwalk Blue”, $28,

Frostbitten! Blue Lips
A sure attention-getter, blue lipstick was seen at the Indashio “American Dream” collection Spring/Summer 2013 show at New York Fashion Week and last year at Lemoniez and Jeremy Scott. Made infamous by pop star/proponent of the wild and weird, Ke$ha, blue lipstick may be the coolest (and strangest?) new beauty trend. If you’re a beauty geek like me, you’ve noticed the internet has been abuzz with reviews of the surprisingly wearable blue lip shade, Lipstick Queen “Hello Sailor” Blue Lipstick. The product, sold exclusively at Barney's New York, has actually sold out! It goes on as a sheer navy blue color, giving lips a cool, deep berry tint that actually makes teeth appear whiter. Blue LipsWhile we’re waiting for Barney’s to restock the shelves with this magical product, there are plenty of other options to try. The trick to pulling this off without looking like a circus clown is to keep the rest of your face very understated; a clean face and simple sweep of black mascara is all you really need.Lipstick BlueTry: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in “RX", a true cyan blue, $18, Lime Crime’s more neon “No She Didn’t”, $15.99, KA`OIR lipstick in “Harlem Knight” by singer-songwriter/rapper/dancer Teyana Taylor, $19.99,

Taking the Red Eye!
Anna Sui Red EyesNothing says chic like a classic red lip, but it’s time to mix it up. Take the color to new heights and try it on your eyes instead, as seen at the Spring 2013 RTW collections for Anna Sui, Ann Yee, Creatures of the Wind and Marimekko. Try a red eyeshadow on it’s own to make a striking impression. Or, apply it as a base color with layers of oranges and yellows to create a beautiful sunset effect on your eyelids. If this hue is too intense for your taste, try a softer coral shade instead, like MAC eyeshadow in “Daydreaming”, $15, The pretty eyeshadow is part of a collection inspired by songstress Haley Williams of Paramour, known for her bright, flame-colored locks (as seen at the top of the page).

Try: Sephora Collection Eyeshadow in “Cherry On Top”, a red matte, $18, Make Up Forever Pure Pigments in “Bright Red”, $20, EspionageNot Today”, $7.50, Red Shadow / Issue 147 - September 2143
