Hot summer days and nights call for cool summer hair.  And this season,  thanks to their ease and versatility, Braids are everywhere. They can be edgy or elegant, and aren’t difficult to create. The next time you find yourself reaching for a ponytail holder, try a cool braided up-do instead. Or, add a few small braids to your curls for a modern, sexy look. These five styles will take your hair from drab to darling in no time.

Fishtail Braids

1. FISHTAIL BRAID
Try this messy, sexy side braid for day or night. Part your hair as you normally would and pull hair to one side. Divide your hair into two sections. Pull a thin strand of hair from over one section and add it under the other section. Do the same on the other side and repeat. The thinner the strands of hair you use are, the more intricate the braid will look! Keep the hair near your face loose and let the layers show. The intentionally disheveled look gives you added cool-girl appeal. For even more fun, add in a brightly colored hair extension like blue or purple to make your fishtail braid really unique!

Waterfall Braid

2. WATERFALL BRAID
This new trend is great for long hair, and looks pretty impressive. The waterfall braid is basically a loose French braid that wraps around the back of your head. Start by taking a small part of hair at the top of one side of your head and braid it three times like a French braid. When you are done with the left section of hair, drop the right strands so they fall along the side of your head. Pick up a new section of hair in the dropped part’s place as well as a new section of hair on the left side, and braid the three sections again. Drop the right section again when you’ve finished the braid. Repeat the steps while wrapping the braid toward the back of your head. Once the waterfall braid passes the back of your head, finish it with a regular braid and finish the end with an elastic.

Inverted French Braid
3. MINI FRENCH BRAIDS
If you’re short on time, braiding just one or two small sections of your hair is an easy way to rock the braid trend. Starting at the front of your head, make a small French braid tracing the outline of your face, leaving the rest of your hair down. Loosely curl the rest of your hair for a flirty, tousled look. This keeps your hair pulled back and let’s your pretty face shine!

Headband Halo Braid4. HEADBAND/HALO BRAID
To achieve the ultimate boho hairstyle, divide your hair into two sections at the nape of your neck and braid pigtails, securing the ends with elastics. Then pull the braids up over your ears and cross the ends while tucking them underneath each other. Use bobby pins to keep the braids in place and finish with hairspray.

Tendrill Braid5. THE TENDRIL BRAID
For a pretty, date-night style, braid only a small piece of your hair and leave the rest down in soft curls, pulled to one side. Ali Larter and Blake Lively are among the many celebs who admire this slightly edgy, yet romantic look that works equally well with blue jeans and a top as it does with a ball gown.
