12 Hot & Wonderfully Wacky August Holidays

By Cassandra Taylor

We all love holidays, and search for any excuse to celebrate whenever we can! As many of you know, August is a bit of a dry month when it comes to recognized national holidays. The letdown of following the the big bang of the 4th of July celebrations combines with the drudge of going back to school, leaving every August-dweller a bit down-in-the-dumps.

But wait, there’s hope! If you’re looking forward to something to give your summer the final send off it deserves, there are a few secret holidays not many know about, and August is chocked full of them.

Aug. 1: Girlfriend’s Day

Aug. 1: Girlfriend’s Day

This one is for the girls! It may seem pretty obvious, but this holiday has a dual meaning. Not only is it a girlfriend appreciation day, where our significant others should treat us as the princessesses we are, but it also means hang out with your girl friends day. Also known as Girl’s Night Out Day. So if you find yourself single, or just wanting to take some girl time and go out on the town with your girlfriends,  mark your calendar for this one.

Aug. 4: International Forgiveness Day

Aug. 4: International Forgiveness Day

It’s just five little letters, but saying “sorry” really does mean a lot. International Forgiveness Day is a time to forgive and be forgiven. Though we all face our fair share of tragedy, what we do with the tragedy, the forgiveness, is why this is all worth living for. So don’t hesitate to reach out on this day. You may be surprised just what you might find!

Aug. 6: Wiggle Your Toes Day

Aug. 6: Wiggle Your Toes Day

If you are a working woman, then you know the hell that wearing heels can have on your feet. When cramped and crunched toes become the norm, you forget what it was like before those pumps. So, on August 6, kick your shoes off and set your piggies free with Wiggle Your Toes Day!

Aug 6: Andy Warhol’s Birthday

Aug 6: Andy Warhol’s Birthday

Here at DISH we have a deep rooted love of Mr. Warhol. From the Factory to Silk Screen Printing, from the Marilyn portrait to the Velvet Underground, from Edie to Twiggie, wherever he placed his creativity a monster of genius bloomed. So sing Happy Birthday to the originator of Pop Culture on August 6 (while wiggling your toes, if it pleases you!).

Aug 8: Sneak Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day

For all you gardeners out there, it is about this time of year everything is starting to come up, and if you’ve ever planted zucchini or squash, you know the endless supply that will keep coming from the earth. What started as a humorous gardener’s holiday has spread on Facebook enough everyone is trying to sneak their neighbor a zucchini surprise. For tips on how to get your neighbor, click here.

Aug 9: Booklover’s Day

Aug 9: Booklover’s Day

If you haven’t curled up with a good book or visited your favorite bookstore lately, now is the time to do it! With school starting up we are all starting to get a little busier, but try to take some time to sit down and delve into your favorite story. Make an event of it! This is a great day for starting or meeting up with a book club, getting together with friends or a loved one, or going out for a picnic in the park and sharing a story.

Aug 13: Vinyl Record Day

Aug 13: Vinyl Record Day

This is different from National Record Store Day in April. This holiday centers around the significance of vinyl itself! If you have a great love of vinyl, take today to sit down and listen to your very favorite records. Just find an old record player in your parents attic? Try it out to see if it still works. This day has the potential to be a day of both appreciation and discovery.

Aug 15: Relaxation Day

Aug 15: Relaxation Day

This day is pretty self-explanatory. When it comes to the rules of the holiday, you make them! If you want to make this a personal day where you indulge in whatever means of relaxation you desire, go for it. If you want to plan a huge at home spa day for you and your friends, that works too. You may even want to go skydiving! Most of our holidays celebrate a special event, significant act, or a memory of something, but this is that one day that really can be all about you.

Aug 18: Bad Poetry Day

Aug 18: Bad Poetry Day

What started as a day to send bad poetry to your old teacher to get a rise out of them has morphed into a day celebrating the complexity and diversity of language. Just how bad can a poem be? What lengths would a writer have to go to make a most horrendous masterpiece? Fun poetry pops up in urban areas around this day, and if you’ve always found yourself wanting to go or perform at one, but you’ve always been too nervous, now is your time. If you're afraid people will judge you, dedicate your performance in recognition of Bad Poetry Day and see how many smiles you’ll get from the audience!

Aug 26: National Dog Day

Aug 26: National Dog Day

As we’re coming up on the Dog Days of Summer, rather than dwelling on how stifling it is outside, take some time to recognize your favorite pooch. This is a day for the dogs, but rather than taking your furry friend to the vet for a check up, take him to the groomers or dog park instead! There are even pet resorts and spas if you want to give your pet a day of refinery. You can also just take the time to play with your dog today. Sometimes we don’t make the time to give our dogs all the love they deserve, but show them just how much you really care on this day.

Aug 27: Just Because Day

Aug 27: Just Because Day

Have you always wondered why something doesn’t have it’s own holiday? Well, Just Because Day is here to let you celebrate just that. Think M*A*S*H should have it’s own holiday? Sit down and have a marathon with the family. The possibilities are really endless! A fun idea if you’ve been looking to get together with friends and just haven’t found the perfect excuse, invite them to a Just Because Day party and do activities that all focus around the notion of just because.

Aug 30: Toasted Marshmallow Day

Aug 30: Toasted Marshmallow Day

With summer coming to an end it’s almost time to put away the campsite and get back to the daily humdrum of our lives, so finish off August with sticky grin spread across your face. It’s Toasted Marshmallow Day! Whether you want to go all out with the chocolate and graham crackers and make s’mores, or just roast marshmallows, there are a lot of ways to get creative with your marshmallow treats today! Experiment with different chocolates, and opt for cookies instead of graham crackers for a new spin on this American summer classic.
