Yummy Thanksgiving Dinner for Your DOG!

Humans indulge in gourmet goodies; why shouldn’t their dogs? It’s that mentality that produced the concept of the dog bakery. These establishments first began to spring up more than 30 years ago, catering to all the dog owners out there that like to spoil their pups rotten. Dog bakeries feature gourmet treats from cake pops and customized birthday cakes to cookies and brownies, all baked especially for canines (and sometimes cats). Handmade treats sold in dog bakeries are typically healthier for dogs as the goods are all-natural and avoid preservatives and harmful ingredients. Often, these treats even come gluten, corn, wheat and/or soy-free.

doughSo where are these pup-friendly bakeries? All over the country, and most of them are mom-and-pop outlets with their own individual flair. Seattle’s Scraps Dog Bakery, Austin’s Groovy Dog Bakery or Woof Gang Bakery, Chicago’s Tails In The City and Boston’s Polka Dog Bakery, to name a few, have earned good reputations from doting dog owners, and there’s also Three Dog Bakery, which opened in Kansas City in 1989 and now has more than 30 locations throughout North America and Japan. If your town doesn’t have a dog bakery, or your pup’s got a preference for a particular shop’s goodies, lots of bakeries even ship their products.

If there’s a downside to treating your dog, it’s that customers often pay a pretty penny for handmade gourmet treats. But if you have the DIY spirit and a few common baking ingredients, you can make your own at home to indulge Fido every now and then. 

Canine Birthday CakeDog Birthday Cake

2 cups wheat flour

1 cup oats

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 mashed banana

3 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

Combine dry ingredients before mixing in wet ingredients. Pour into a greased 8x8” cake pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until knife inserted in cake comes out clean. Let cool, then frost with softened cream cheese. Swap cupcake tins for the cake pan to make “pupcakes.”

Carob Chip Cookiescookies

1 cup vegetable oil

2 eggs

1/2 cup peanut butter

3 tablespoons honey

2 tsp vanilla

2-3 cups wheat flour

1 cup carob chips

Combine oil, eggs, peanut butter, honey and vanilla. Stir in flour, then carob chips. Round tablespoonfuls of dough and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake on 400 for 15-20 minutes. Allow treats to dry out completely before storing.

Peanut Butter Bacon Bonesbones

2 1/2 cups wheat flour

2 cups oats

3/4 cup granola

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 cup honey

1 cup vegetable oil

1 cup peanut butter

10 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled

1 egg

Combine dry ingredients, then stir in wet ingredients. Roll dough out to 1/4” thickness and cut with bone-shaped cookie cutter. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Allow treats to dry out completely before storing. Feel free to play with ingredients for different flavored bones, like swapping veggies for peanut butter.  

*Want to frost your treats with something other than cream cheese? Melted yogurt or carob chips are canine-safe.
