Diners are de rigueur, retro cooking is all the rage, and comfort food of all kinds has come back in a huge way, and you can't get much more comforting than Pot Pies, the quintessentially folksy fare of the 1950's. Now, in POT PIES: Comfort Food Under Cover (Doubleday, $24.95), author Diane Phillips brings Pot Pies back into our lives, but with a difference.

Leave it to our Modern Major General to discover this book at the home of a tres chic friend, tucked away on a shelf. An effort to borrow it met with resistance; nope, above referenced tres chic friend refused to part with it, saying she used it too much. Intrigued, our MMG got her own copy, (which she won't part with either) but she did suggest we share the INFORMATION about this fabulous cookbook with all of you (just not the book!)

Diane Phillips' Pot Pies can be made of Meat, Vegetables, Chicken, and Fish, and are not what you might expect. Unexpected ingredients are encased in delicious and unusual crusts, all easy to make from ingredients most likely already in your kitchen. For example, how does a Monte Cristo Pie that boasts Turkey, Black Forest Ham, and Swiss Cheese sound? Or Turkey Pot Pie with Cranberry Thyme Crust? Or our MMG's favorite Mahi Mahi Pie with Tropical Fruit Salsa Crust? She insists that we also mention the unbelievable Smoked Salmon Pie with Cornmeal Crust made with Cream Cheese, Smoked Salmon, Onion, and Dill.

These unusual and delicious Pies are casual enough for a Pot Luck, yet fancy enough for a Saturday Night Dinner Party for 8! And no, you cannot borrow my book!
