The MTV Video Music Awards were held in NYC on September 6, 2001, at the Metropolitan Opera House. The only pre-September 11 event featured in this story, this show burst with the exuberance of those happy, pre-disaster times. Kid Rock showed off his girl friend, an almost naked Pamela Anderson, U2 won the Vanguard Award and honored Joey Ramone, Andy Dick Dressed up as “Daphne Aguilera” to take on his “cousin” Christine, and Britney performed with a snake while singing “Slave 4 U” and infuriated PETA. Everyone mourned the loss of Aaliyah.

The “Moon Man” for Best Video went to Christine Aguilera (sorry, Daphne), Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Missy Elliott for “Lady Marmalade”. However, you could call it a total sweep for Fatboy Slim who won 6 Moon Men, followed by N’Sync who won 4. By the way, Alicia Keyes won for Best Video New Artist for “Fallin’” / Issue 29 - September 2018
