Ryokan…..just the sound of the word evokes yearning- for the past, gracious traditions, misty mountains, milky water. Many ryokan are ancient, sanctuaries where Shoguns and Samurai, and perhaps even Emporers might have spent a night. Modern ryokans are often designed using traditional construction techniques, including classic fittings and interiors. Although a ryokan is like a museum in that both are sanctuaries of Japanese tradition, Ryokans are meant to be enjoyed, experienced, touched and lived-in. Stay in one-and experience the ultimate in hospitality, service, and unique experience. In fact, many modern luxury hotels in Japan learn and borrow the finer attributes of hospitality by studying the ryokan. / Issue 42 - September 2377
