We all know the plot of the timeless fairy tale, Cinderella. It was a tiny, perfectly shaped foot that made all the difference for the poor servant girl, enabling her to be taken away from her hard life to live in the lap of luxury with the handsome prince. It’s every girl’s dream. Maybe women are taking the spirit of this tale to heart because today cosmetic surgery for feet is a growing trend.

The most common types of cosmetic foot surgery are to correct the appearance of bunions, hammertoes, and the shortening of a second toe so it won’t exceed the big toe. But some people are having their smallest little piggy removed in order to wear fashionable shoes with very pointy toes.

Current fashion trends and a growing acceptance of cosmetic surgery are likely the culprits fanning the flame of this trend. Who wouldn’t want to have feet that look beautiful in any pair of high-fashion designer shoes? It may seem a great idea, but the risk of surgery is too high for people who are not experiencing any problems with their feet, according to the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society and the American Podiatric Medical Association. The expert opinion of these groups is that unnecessary surgery on the feet should never be done because of the risks involved.

The statement also warns that many of the problems people have with their feet (bunions, hammertoes, and claw toes) are often caused by repeatedly wearing shoes that simply do not fit. The AOFAS estimates that a majority of the doctors in the group have treated patients with foot problems related to cosmetic foot surgery.

"Patients who undergo these procedures may do so believing that a 20-minute operation will enable them to wear more attractive shoes, when, in fact, they may be risking 20 or more years of disabling pain." says Rock G. Positano, DPM, a podiatrist and Director of the Non-Operative Foot and Ankle Service at the Hospital for Special Surgeries.

But who really cares? It seems that in the current conflict between the shoe- Prada, Gucci and Jimmy Choo, and good sense-the shoe is definitely the winner!
