LIFE SHIFT: Let Go and Live Your Dream By Aleta St. James ($14.00, Simon and Schuster)

At age 57, Aleta St. James, author, energy healer and success coach, gave birth to twins and became a first-time mother. This had been her dream for decades and despite public opinion and many other obstacles, she finally found herself realizing her deep seeded desire. In her book LIFE SHIFT, now out in trade paperback, she explains how she achieved this life-long dream and how we can easily follow her lead.

If you could have the life you really want, what would it look like? This is the first question posed in Chapter One: Identifying your desires, dreams and destiny. Perhaps you’d like to change your career, or travel the world, or simply get in shape to run a marathon. No matter what your dream looks like, once you can visualize it, you are ready to begin.

In Chapter Two: Life Shift Tool Kit, several tools are introduced for use in shifting your energies and helping you focus on changes you want to make. Color Immersion is just one of these tools, and St. James fully illustrates the power of this practice. By immersing yourself in one color or another, you will find it easier to draw a particular energy or set of energies your way. For example, Ruby Red has to do with “grounding yourself, harmonizing and empowering personal relationships” while Luminous Yellow will help you “disengage from negative feelings and strengthen the feeling of personal power and unlimited possibility”.

St. James stresses the need for women to focus on letting go of the accepted Alpha male energy we are programmed to draw upon, which tells us that being in control will lead to success. In doing so, we leave the less recognized Magnetic female energy to languish. By employing this energy, we are shown how to visualize our dreams while letting go of expectations and allowing the Universe to do the work. When we engage the latter, says the author, the outcome is better than anything we could have planned for ourselves. Various meditations combined with breathing exercises and prayers round out the incredible array of techniques in this book, which teach us to let go of negativity and embrace the true potential that resides inside each of us.

I love sushi. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also it is absolutely delicious and you will never find a better protein rush, anywhere. If you feel the same way I do, then you will definitely want to own a copy of Hiroko Shimbo’s new book


Sushi has been a food staple of Japan for over 2500 years. By the 1600’s, sushi had become so popular as a fast food, that there was a stand on every street corner in every major city in Japan. And by 1960, this marvelous culinary delight made its way to America and other parts of the world. Now, with the help of Ms. Shimbo, you can learn to make Sushi right in your own kitchen.

A list of tools and ingredients is provided in Chapter Four: The Sushi Pantry, where we are also provided with shopping tips and storage tips for everything from the fish itself to the Nori (seaweed sheets) and the knives you will need to get started. Recipes for various types of Sushi rolls are in abundance here, as well as some unusual ones for Roast Beef Pressed Sushi and Western Vegetable Summer Tossed Sushi. Beautiful color photographs and prints of ancient Japanese illustrations complete the look of this marvelous sushi encyclopedia, making it easy for even a novice sushi-maker to give it a go.

If you prefer to have your sushi prepared by a chef at a Sushi restaurant, you will be entertained and educated by the chapter on Sushi restaurant etiquette such as whether to sit at the bar or a table (this depends on how much you wish to interact with the chef), how to use chopsticks, and the meaning of a few key Japanese phrases. For instance, when you walk in, if you hear the chef calling “Irasshai!”, which means “Welcome back!”, you can answer “Yoroshiku”, which means “Hello, and please treat me kindly.“ When you eat at a sushi restaurant, you are the guest and the audience and the chef is the host and performer,” says Shimbo. So remember, next time you sit at a Sushi bar and want to thank the chef, don’t forget to say “Itadakimasu. Gochiso-sama!” which means “Thank you. This was a feast!”

Well, if these factoids interest you and you’d like to learn how to create your own wine cellar for $140, you need to pick-up a copy of THE SAUCY SISTERS GUIDE TO WINE.

There’s nothing more wonderful than a good glass of wine, but sometimes knowing just what to drink can be a daunting experience. Luckily, the Saucy Sisters make choosing what to drink easy, beginning with “The Way To Wine”, and in subsequent chapters “Varietals Are The Spice Of Life” and “Grape Deals For The Home”, where we’re encouraged to recognize the Wine Diva that dwells within each of us. “Being a diva means drinking what you like-with apologies to know one.” say Nowak and Wichman, who really are sisters and who have spent many years educating women about wine, both on the radio and in print. There’s even a short quiz to determine if you have the stuff to become a member of the Saucy Sisterhood of Wine Divas, but fear not, this is not a quiz you can fail.

”Wine Pairings for Sexual Appetietes”, a fun and racy section of the book, literally suggests a wine for almost every intimate moment you could imagine. And other sections like “Wine Fundamentals…Distilled in a Few Pick-Up Lines” follow the notion that our attraction to certain wines can easily coincide with our taste in men- a delicious note that threads throughout Not only did this book make me laugh out loud, but all that laughing made me thirsty, so I was grateful for the chapters “It’s My Party and I’ll Wine If I Want To” and “Have Wine, Will Travel”, which gave me all the info I needed to make a great selection at my local wine shop without breaking the bank.

I could go on and on with my praises for this must-have wine guide, but instead, I think I’ll go uncork something delightful and raise my glass to “The Saucy Sisterhood of Wine Divas” everywhere. Cheers!
