After starring in sci-fi thrillers such as Jurassic Park and Independence Day, actor Jeff Goldblum is well-known for his acting skills as a scientist who believes in the impossible, whether that may be dinosaurs roaming the earth today or aliens taking over the planet. When Goldblum was offered the chance to take on an entirely different kind of role on the highly successful series Law and Order: Criminal Intent, which has now moved to the USA Network, he jumped at the chance to do something different.

“Because I’m a humble student and an aspirant of acting and growth, I like to do things I haven’t done before,” Goldblum tells Dish. “Yeah, I hope it’s something that’s different for me.”

The show itself has gone through many changes, moving from NBC to a whole new channel, and USA is producing new and original content for the show along with adding new characters, such as Goldblum’s character Detective Zach Nichols. So, how does Goldblum feel about joining the extremely popular series?

“Thrilled,” Goldblum declares. “I love the idea that [the series] has so many followers. I love the way it keeps evolving in an organic way. I talk to all kinds of people and they say, ‘Oh, that’s my favorite show. I never miss one. I’ll be watching.’ And it’s all over the world. When I was in London, I couldn’t turn the TV on without seeing it. It’s great. I’m very excited. It’s a treat for me.”

This new season of Law and Order: Criminal Intent, which began shooting in September of this year, brings back familiar faces including Detective Robert Goren (Vincent D’Onofrio), Detective Alex Eames (Kathryn Erbe), and Detective Mike Logan (Chris Noth). Goldblum takes on the role of Detective Zach Nichols, the son of two psychiatrists who felt he was being a rebel by choosing to join the police force instead of going into the family business. But that didn’t stop him from collaborating with his father on many cases, using his father’s psychiatric expertise as an expert witness. Det. Nichols decided to take a hiatus following the attacks in New York City on September 11, 2001. But Nichols couldn’t stay away forever, and he rejoins the team to work with Detective Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson) and his previous partner Captain Danny Ross (Eric Bogosian).

After working on the stage in London with Kevin Spacey on a David Mammoth play called Speed the Plow, Goldblum admits he is pleased to be back in the states working on a new endeavor. “I’m thrilled to go back and live in New York and do this show,” he says.

Don’t miss Jeff Goldblum and the rest of the cast in the premiere of season eight of Law and Order: Criminal Intent on Friday, January 9 at 9pm et/pt on USA! / Issue 89 - September 2018
